November 2011: A World Record Month
A few years ago I had what I called the "Best Week Ever." It started by flying to Oregon to visit my long distance boyfriend. We saw my favorite musician Jack Johnson play live outdoors with the mountains surrounding us. I then flew to Miami (also my longest flight ever) to vacation with my girlfriends and watch the Chiefs versus the Dolphins. Best. Week. Ever.
Well I'm fairly certain I just experienced the Best MONTH Ever. You can scroll through my appearances and see all the amazing opportunities that came my way this month. I met the director of the Presidential Fitness Challenge and "Let's Move." I threw the ceremonial first pass at a Kansas City Chiefs game alongside one of my all time favorite running backs. I returned to my alma mater to address my sisters within Delta Zeta Sorority. I taught the "Move Your Body" routine to pro cheerleaders while visiting Philadelphia. I launched the Lady Raiders 2012 Swimsuit Calendar in Richmond, Va. And then... I broke a world record.
What!?! Wait a minute. Yep, that's right. Ms. United States 2011 is now in the Guinness Book of World Records. Here's how.
About two years ago I met an amazing woman named Darlene Cavalier. She was a dancer for the 76ers NBA team, and I was an NFL cheerleader for the Rams and Chiefs, so we clicked instantly. Darlene holds a PhD and writes for Discover Magazine. Her passion is teaching young women about science, math and engineering, so she became known as "The Science Cheerleader." Darlene developed a website and began featuring current and alumni pro cheerleaders like ourselves who worked in or studied the sciences.
Darlene's goal was to bring the website to life through a performance team of Science Cheerleaders. These women would greet the public, work with children, and playfully challenge stereotypes. She recruited me as the choreographer and creative director, we designed a uniform, recruited 13 performers, and choreographed a 20-minute stage show to appear at the U.S. Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, DC in October 2010.
Since then, the Science Cheerleaders have become daily water cooler conversation among scientists, journalists, and well, everyone! That performance had over 150,000 views on Youtube and was featured on CNN. The Science Cheerleaders have been invited to perform at NASA, the Hispanic Science & Engineering Festival, and this fall, Darlene, the Science Cheerleaders, and Ms. United States officially made history by partnering with Pop Warner Little Scholars.
Early in November, Darlene asked me to choreograph a 5-minute science cheer to be performed by American cheerleaders in an attempt to beat China's world record of the largest cheer. Five days later, I had gone through three edits of the cheer, hours of video and scripting, and at last... the final instructional video was sent to Trenton, New Jersey for the big event.
On November 12, 1,300 Pop Warner cheerleaders piled into a school gymnasium while Ms. United States appeared on a jumbotron and led a cheer for science. On the floor keeping the energy high were Science Cheerleaders from the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens. Here's the Video of the Guinness World Record Cheer for Science!
We waited a few weeks, and by November 30, the confirmation came...
"We are pleased to confirm that you have successfully set the new Guinness World Records title for the Largest Cheerleading Cheer. The greatest number of cheerleaders simultaneously performing a cheer was achieved by Science Cheerleaders & Pop Warner (both USA) at the Sun National Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey, USA, on 12 November 2011. Guinness World Records congratulates you on your achievement.”
I'm so proud to be a part of this event and of the Science Cheerleaders organization. I've met women of amazing backgrounds who share the pro cheerleading experience with me. One of the Science Cheerleaders, a NASA engineer, recently competed to become Ms. Texas United States! I believe we'll be seeing quite a bit more of the Science Cheerleaders in the years to come.
So what does one do when they've broken a world record? I guess I can sleep soundly tonight! Bucket list #8 checked off. What will happen in December?? Only time will tell...

Thanksgiving Blessings
This has been an emotional week for me, and I am incredibly thankful of many things.
Earlier this month, my family welcomed a child born to my cousin Becky near Boston. We are planning a 2012 summer family reunion, and it will be wonderful to meet the new member of the Eilers Clan!
A few days later came the news that we lost my uncle and Godfather Craig near Dubuque, Iowa to a heart attack. He leaves behind 4-year old daughter Hannah, who he adopted from Guatamala. An accident several years ago left Craig paraplegic, yet he still lived with graciousness and pride, strong and determined to live a life full of meaning. He taught me to be a Green Bay Packers fan and even took me to a game at Lambeau Field in 2009. He has been a wonderful supporter of me through my endeavors, coming to Kansas City to watch me cheer, attending graduations, and always checking in on my relationships. He even asked me to be in his wedding and to be his daughter's Godmother. His brother and seven sisters are celebrating his life now and truly understanding the impact he had on them.
This sequence of events reminds me that as good things come in one's life, you must often sacrifice to make room for God's blessings. That is the circle of life. We all must allow mother nature to move us forward to experience what lies ahead.
During this past year, I've been very blessed. Craig once told me he thought I had no time to cherish my blessings. I was bombarded with success and sacrificing my sleep to reach my goals, which to me, was no big deal! But he was right. I recently vowed to "stop and smell the roses" more often, to have a lazy Sunday, to carve out time for myself and my loved ones. And that is truly what Thanksgiving is all about.
I wish everyone time this week with your family and loved ones, whether it be in person or by phone. Say thank you not just today, but every day. Let others know they are special and that you are proud of them. Take time to let your blessings sink in - the gift of life, of education, work, love and so much more. If times are hard, keep pushing forward and believe in the circle of life and happiness. Your best day is yet to come.

Confessions of A St Louis Cardinals Fan
I'm a native Missourian, and I'm just so excited for St Louis today! The Cardinals baseball team rallied to win in the 11th inning of game 6 in the World Series, forcing a game 7 playoff, which will be played tonight in St. Louis. They'll be playing the 2010 World Series 2nd place team the Texas Rangers.
Many people know that I lived in St. Louis and was a cheerleader for the Rams NFL Football Team. St. Louis is the most beautiful sports city, and it thrills me to see such excitement coming to the city where I lived.
... but I have some confessions.
1) I grew up in Kansas City and am more of a Royals fan, who in 1985 beat the St Louis Cardinals to win the World Series. We haven't been very good since then, but fair weather fan I certainly am not! Have you seen my KC Royals first pitch from September this year?
2) Just about 3 weeks ago I was whining about my boyfriend wanting to watch the MLB playoffs on TV. I think my exact quote was, "Baseball is soooooo booooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrringggggg." The truth is that I LOVE going to baseball games, but can't we all admit that watching the game on TV is dreadfully painful at times?
3) I only lived in St Louis for 10 months.
4) I've never been to a Cardinals game although have gotten lost driving past Busch Stadium many times (it's a beautiful stadium!). I think I have been to a Royals game when they played the Cardinals, but I'm sure I was wearing blue.
5) I do own ONE piece of Cardinals apparel - a red logo tank top. It's about 45 degrees outside today in Richmond, Virginia, but I'm wearing it proudly.
6) I am really afraid of squirrels but for some reason love this rally squirrel. Kinda looks like me in this photo, do you think?? If you haven't heard of Buschie the Cardinals Rally Squirrel, check out this Newsy.com video (which, on a side note, is produced out of University of Missouri - Columbia award-winning journalism department, and I developed their online marketing while I lived in St. Louis. Love me some Newsy.com!)
Whew, I feel much better. I was feeling somewhat like a bandwagon Cardinals fan, so I had to get that off my chest!
What I'm learning about the 2011 MLB World Series is that we can all benefit from a resurgence of energy, no matter where it roots - you just have to open yourself up to let it happen. And if it comes from a city 2,000 miles away from you, who cares!?! If it comes from sharing in the happiness of your friends who are TRUE Cardinals fans, well that is just as exciting. Celebrate. Take time off from work. Watch the game, eat a hamburger, and enjoy the journey - win or lose.
Good luck tonight Cards!

Mayor Jones Announces Healthy Richmond Campaign
Mayor Dwight C. Jones introduced the Healthy Richmond Campaign today during the City’s Employee Health and Safety Fair at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. The Healthy Richmond Campaign is a new City initiative designed to promote the improved health of City employees and residents by addressing the disparities affecting access to health care and health resources in the city of Richmond.
Mayor Jones stated that, “Launching the Healthy Richmond Campaign internally during the City’s Employee Health and Safety Fair presented an excellent opportunity to promote this initiative which includes a comprehensive workplace health promotion program. A public kick-off event is currently being scheduled for next spring. The goal of the Healthy Richmond Campaign is to promote healthier lifestyles and behaviors that will improve individual health and help prevent many of the chronic diseases and illnesses that affect far too many youth and adults in our city.”
The Healthy Richmond Campaign was proposed by the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Policy, which was established in 2010, to address Mayor Jones’ concerns of the disparity in health outcomes across the Richmond community. The Blue Ribbon Commission researched many factors affecting health in Richmond, and proposed five focus areas to help improve the health and well-being of City residents: Healthy Richmond Campaign to promote healthy lifestyles to the community; health and social equity; behavioral health; medical homes for uninsured; and support for healthcare providers.
Members of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Policy are working on strategies to impact the identified focus areas. At the same time, several departments within the City’s Human Services division are moving forward in implementing the Healthy Richmond Campaign by engaging the community and encouraging the public to proactively embrace the Healthy Richmond concept by improving and maintaining their health.
The Healthy Richmond Campaign is preparing to conduct various activities and to participate with community events. The campaign involves current City initiatives, commissions, and task forces consisting of: Pedestrian, Bicycling and Trails Commission; Breast Feeding Commission; Active Seniors and Special Populations; Food Policy Task Force; and the Richmond Lets Move! Initiative.
For more information or to find out how to get involved in the Healthy Richmond Campaign, please call (804) 646-5823.

My Love for Peanut Butter at 8am
Guess what! You can have your peanut butter and eat it too!!
I'm a certified personal trainer, fitness instructor, choreographer and dance team coach. These passions led me to choose "Let's Move" as my platform as Ms. United States. Helping kids make healthy choices is important to me, so I try to follow my own advice and share it with others! Here's a wonderful recipe that will start your day off right.
Typically I choose low-carb, low-fat recipes, especially when training for pageants, shoots and performances. In recent years I've been forced to stray from the peanut butter aisle at the grocery store because I love it so much, I will eat the whole jar! This fall I came across an amazing recipe to start my day off right, and now I'm able to bring home the PB again. Check it out!
Oxygen Magazine, August 2011:
High Energy Cinnamon Peanut Butter Pancake
Ingredients
I'm certainly no chef, so this is a simple, quick, delicious recipe that makes me look forward to breakfast!
In November, I'll be visiting Kansas City and Philadelphia to talk to kids about health & fitness, to dance and meet new people! Contact msunitedstates2011@gmail.com to request an appearance.

NFL Cheerleaders Reunion, November Kansas City Chiefs Appearance
Anyone who knows me can attribute to the importance of my time as an NFL Cheerleader for the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams organizations. These honors allowed me to realize the importance of service, teamwork, and empowerment within a group of successful women. These women have shown me what it means to be well rounded in career and social lives, to enjoy life, sports and friendship. I truly attribute my success today to my experience within the NFL and the opportunities these organizations have extended to me.
In September 2011, I was honored to be involved in the inaugural NFL Cheerleaders Reunion in Las Vegas, where I emceed the event and met many women from across the country, including cheerleaders from the Buccaneers, Colts, Falcons, Raiders, Cardinals, Cowboys, Jaguars, Panthers and more.
In November 2011, I will return to Kansas City to throw the first pass at the Kansas City Chiefs game vs the Denver Broncos, also in association with the annual Chiefs Cheerleaders Reunion. Stay tuned to many other appearances associated with this visit to the Midwest.

Throwing the First Pitch at Kansas City Royals Game
One of my first stops as Ms. United States was at a Kansas City Royals game in July 2011. I was thrilled to be invited to throw the first pitch this fall during the Royals' final series at Kauffman Stadium. As one of my favorite childhood pasttimes, I was so honored to step on the field and be a part of the action on September 13, 2011. I even threw a strike! Thanks to my friends and family for coming out to share the moment with me.

9:00am I'm photo ready! Before leaving Virginia, Lucinda from Face Value Salon in Charlottesville helped me prepare my hair, and Gigi Curtin, my Mary Kay rep in Richmond, helped with my makeup color and skincare. I feel like a million bucks! My choice is a red Venus swimsuit. I love the cut of the suit! I join the other Ms. candidates near the pool and wait for our photos. Photographer Joe Pier and his assistant Eduardo are great!
10:00am Off to rehearsal again. Today we are learning the preliminary opening number to Lady Gaga's "I Was Born This Way." The Ms. delegates will be in preliminaries with the Teen delegates. We then have a whole new Parade of Gowns to learn. It's amazing the work that goes into these productions!
12:00pm Fuddrucker's salad, thank you very much!
1:00pm Back to rehearsal. Dancing, walking. smiling, need I say more?
Miss, Teen and Ms. Virginia in Las Vegas |
8:30pm Dinner at Bill's Casino on the Strip. I give it a 4.5 out of 10. Sorry, Bill.
9:30pm Time to head home sweet home to the Orleans. When we get there, the band is rockin in the lobby, so we stop and dance a bit to "Sweet Home Alabama!"
Off to bed ... tomorrow we meet a famous actress from one of my favorite childhood films, and you'll get the inside scoop on Miss United States's favorite ringtone and odd sleeping habits. Nothing is off the record here! Until then....
CHEERS! ~ Laura
